John L. Lewis was born in Lucas, Iowa in 1880. From 1917 until his death in 1969 he served the United Mine Workers of America, acting as its president from 1920 to 1960. Robert Kaplan was the research director for the United Mine Workers Union of America (UMWA) from 1942 to 1967. He also served as the archivist in charge of documenting American labor leader John L.
